After dropping the first two games of their season against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Montreal Expos lost the first game of their four-game series against the Chicago Cubs, 6-2, at Wrigley Field. The Expos were eventually swept by the Cubbies and they ended up losing their first seven games.

On Apr. 3, 1998, Montreal jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Brad Fullmer (Vladimir Guerrero tripled right before the Fullmer at bat). Unfortunately for the Expos, the Cubs scored three runs in the fourth inning, two more in the sixth and a final one in the seventh.

Meanwhile, starting pitcher Javier Vazquez allowed three earned runs, six hits and two walks over five innings.

Cubs starter Steve Trachsel tossed 7.1 innings. He allowed four hits, two earned runs and two walks, while striking out seven.
