On Apr. 1, 1997, the Montreal Expos opened the season with a 2-1 home win over the St. Louis Cardinals in front of 33, 437 fans at Olympic Stadium.
With the game tied at one in the bottom of the ninth inning, Rondell White singled off Rich Batchelor. Henry Rodriguez then singled to right field pushing White to third base. The Cardinals then intentionally walked David Segui to load the bases. Pinch hitter Sherman Obando then walked to bring in the game-winning run.
Expos starting pitcher Jim Bullinger gave up five hits an earned run and one walk while striking out one in six innings. He gave up a double to Willie McGee and a triple to Delino DeShields.
